Seasickness is miserable enough without a worry about your teeth. The ADA’s consumer site has a short answer, and this page adds a small cabin checklist. General information, not dental advice.
What MouthHealthy says
The ADA’s MouthHealthy page on cold and flu season says that after vomiting you can swish with water, a diluted mouth rinse or a mixture of water and 1 tsp. baking soda. Then spit, and brush about 30 minutes later. The reason it gives is that if you brush too soon, you are just rubbing that acid all over the hard outer shell of your teeth.
A cabin checklist
| When | Do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Straight after | Swish with water, a diluted mouth rinse or water with 1 tsp. baking soda, then spit | MouthHealthy |
| About 30 minutes later | Brush gently as usual | MouthHealthy: brush about 30 minutes later |
| If it keeps happening | Tell a dentist | Our suggestion |
Pack a small bottle of water in the cabin and keep your kit within reach; the travel oral-care kit checklist lists it, and our oral care on a cruise or ferry guide covers the rest of the trip. If hot weather leaves your mouth dry, see dry mouth in hot weather.
Why waiting helps
Vomiting brings stomach acid into your mouth. MouthHealthy’s point is that brushing straight away spreads that acid over the enamel, so a rinse first and a short wait is the sequence it describes. If you do not have mouth rinse, plain water is on its list, and you can keep a small bottle by the bed. Wait about 30 minutes, then brush with your usual fluoride toothpaste. If you are sick several times in a night, repeating the rinse each time and brushing once later is our own reading, not MouthHealthy wording.
Easing the seasickness
The NHS page on motion sickness suggests breathing fresh air, looking at a fixed point such as the horizon and breathing slowly, and says a pharmacist can recommend tablets or patches.
A note on the umbrella
FlosserGuide is owned by the same people as Calm Eden, which sells the Haven Umbrella. Its cruise umbrella guide covers port-day rain and sun. According to the seller’s listing the Haven folds to 40 cm (15.75 in), weighs about 390 g and clips to a bag.
In short
- Rinse, spit, wait about 30 minutes, then brush.
- Keep water and a kit in the cabin.
- Tell a dentist if it keeps happening.
